Here is the way I teach beginner scoring in bridge.

“Now, before the break I want to talk about something totally different. In case you are interested, I want to tell you about some companies that are hiring in this area. These companies need shop floor as well as executive positions filled.”

“At the first company they will train you for 6 hours for which you do not get paid. All people do this basic training. After that if you are in a shop floor position you must commit to working either 1, 2 or 3 hours and if you complete your committed hours you will receive $30 for every hour worked and a $50 bonus at the end. However, if you quit before your commitment is done you will be fined, rather than paid. In the executive position, you MUST commit to at least 4 hours work (after your training for which you get nothing). You will then get the same $30 an hour, but your bonus at the end will be $300. In either case if you work for longer you will get paid for those hours as well.”

“The second company, which makes CDs, works the same, but you only get $20 and hour and you have to work for 5 hours minimum to be on the executive payroll. Training requirements and bonuses are the same as before.”

“There is also a company in North Toronto that too required 6 hours of unpaid training, but then pays $40 for the first hour and $30 after that. Their executive position kicks in at 3 hours minimum commitment.”

“You MUST decide in advance if you want to be an executive or not. If you sign on as a shop floor worker, but work for longer hours, you still only get the shop floor bonus. To get the executive bonus you must sign up for that at the start.”

“If you do not at least fulfill your agreed commitment of hours you will be paid nothing, and be fined $50 for every hour you were negligent.”

My Comment: The above is a basic outline - I talk this up a bit and get them all excited about it. I find they can relate to work hours and pay very easily and this translates to understanding the bidding system very easily. The idea of Game vs Part score depends on “what contract they signed in the first place”.

They always talk about this amongst themselves at the break - sometimes wondering if I have gone mad, sometimes figuring out what I am doing!

After the break I bring out my posters with the scoring and also mention slams. I let them know that in some cases the bonuses are greater (vulnerable), but do not dwell on that with beginners.
